DHL and CMA CGM scale up low-carbon ocean freight with biofuel agreement

DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM have strengthened their collaboration on maritime decarbonization by agreeing to jointly use 8,990 metric tons of UCOME second-generation biofuel for container shipping.

The initiative is expected to deliver an estimated 25,000 metric tons of CO2 e well-to-wake emissions reductions for ocean freight transported under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, marking a significant milestone in the partners’ efforts to reduce the carbon intensity of global supply chains.

Under the agreement, CMA CGM will physically bunker the biofuel across its fleet, while DHL allocates the resulting emissions savings to customers through its Book and Claim model. The approach allows shippers to benefit from lower-carbon maritime transport even when their individual consignments are not carried on vessels directly using sustainable fuels.

“This collaboration marks another milestone in our mission toward low-carbon supply chains,” said Casper Ellerbaek, head of global ocean freight at DHL Global Forwarding. “By leveraging sustainable marine fuels, we help our customers achieve their climate goals and drive real progress toward decarbonization.”

The partnership combines DHL’s GoGreen Plus service with CMA CGM’s ACT+ low-carbon transport offering, enabling customers to reduce well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared with conventional marine fuels.

Olivier Nivoix, executive vice president shipping, CMA CGM Group, said: “Our partnership with DHL demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate the shift to low-carbon shipping. ACT+ offers reliable and scalable solutions backed by our fleet designed for alternative fuels.”

CMA CGM has reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping operations by 57% since 2008 and continues to invest in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels as part of its commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. DHL has also set a net zero GHG emissions target for 2050 across its logistics operations.

Both companies will continue exploring opportunities to scale the use of lower-carbon fuels and develop joint solutions to support customers in reducing Scope 3 emissions and meeting decarbonization targets.
