After transporting 7.6 million linear-meters of cargo in 2024, Baleària has reduced its CO2 emissions per linear-meter by 4.9% compared to the previous year.

In total, the shipping company stopped the emission of 15,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide as a result of both more efficient operations and a 184% growth in the use of natural gas, among other actions.

Georges Bassoul, general manager of Baleària, highlighted, “Reliability, punctuality and adaptation to customers’ logistical demands are some of our commitments to ensure impeccable service in all our daily connections.”

Last year, Baleària transported 7.6 million linear-meters of cargo in the holds of its ships, which represents about 564,000 trucks, with a growth of 3% compared to the previous year. National routes accounted for 70% of the cargo, with food and beverages (23%), groupage (16%) and construction materials (11%) the main products transported.

National routes

A total of 60% of the shipping company’s cargo is in the Balearic Islands, where in 2024 it maintained the same linear-meters of cargo carried as the previous year. The shipping company has six ferries, some gas-powered, which link the Peninsula with the Balearic Islands (from the ports of Barcelona and Valencia to Mallorca, Menorca and Eivissa) and complements this service with two fast ferries.

It also has three other boats in the Balearic Islands, one electric, which ensure the inter-island service throughout the year and serve as reinforcement in high season. With arrivals scheduled early in the morning, the company optimizes each trip to the islands enabling the return to take place during the same day. Bassoul said, “This operational efficiency not only benefits Baleària and its customers, but also contributes to the economic development of non-peninsular territories, facilitating reliable and safe transport of goods.”

Ferry Sicilia

In Melilla, the company operates an electric-powered ferry from the port of Malaga. In Ceuta, it operates the public line with a ferry and a slow ferry, with 10 daily services, while with the Canary Islands it operates two ferries with dual natural gas engines, offering between three and four weekly departures.

Routes with Morocco and Algeria

In connections with Morocco, Baleària offers 10 daily services to Tangier Med from Algeciras, and one connection from Motril, as well as daily services between Almería and Nador. In 2024, Morocco experienced an 8% in daily services and accounted for 30% of the total cargo, making its a candidate for future development. The shipping company also makes several weekly departures to Algeria, to the ports of Mostaganem, Algiers and Oran.

“We are a reference shipping company for large food chains, thanks to a specialized team and our ability to adapt to the tension of the logistics chain and the difficulty of managing high temporality,” said Bassoul.

Digitization

For years, Baleària has focused on digitizing the entire freight transportation cycle so that port operations are more agile, customers can better plan their logistics and carriers can travel more comfortably. Through these efforts, Baleària has developed a new digital portal with interconnected systems, which provides cargo customers with information in real time, enabling them to manage their trips more efficiently and access data, such as the location of equipment and ships or possible incidents and changes in routes.

In related news, Rolls-Royce recently reached a long-term power purchase agreement with Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) for the annual purchase of around 20,000MWh of CO2-free electrical energy generated by hydropower
