The world’s leading exhibition and conference for maritime electrification, decarbonization and GHG reduction solutions, Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe, opens next week in Amsterdam – and it’s even bigger and better than before!

Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe

The free-to-attend Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe will showcase new electric and hybrid marine transportation and propulsion solutions, shore charging equipment and efficient emerging technologies to help realize zero-emission shipping and net zero. Visitors will be able to browse and ask in-depth questions of the experts on hand about the line-up of top technologies for the electrification and hybridization of workboats, ferries, superyachts and other marine vessels, as well as port and harbor infrastructure.

Leading companies across the exhibition floor will include ABB, Bosch Engineering, Corvus Energy, Cavotec, Lehmann Marine, Twin Disc, The Switch Engineering, RIX Industries and Wärtsilä. Early exhibitor news ahead of the event includes reveals on carbon-free ammonia-to-electrical power systems, lithium-ion battery solutions, battery emulation, battery testing and fuel cell emulation solutions, hybrid systems, shore power solutions for tanker vessels and solid-state DC breakers.

Alongside this, Volta Future will present a revolutionary e-outboard with 222kW (300hp) continuous power and 790Nm. The next-gen e-outboard is called iWOP, which stands for invisible waterline outboard power-drive. The housing of the iWOP has been designed to be much more compact than classic outboard housings and contains two specially developed, high-performance electric motors together with a directly cooled double-inverter. The iWOP can be mounted not only on boats with transom (outboard) but also on boats with (normally) inboards instead of the sterndrive.

At the expo, Kawasaki will exhibit its integrated systems for ship propulsion and power supply that can achieve major reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This can be achieved through highly integrated propulsion systems based on the company’s extensive experience and technology accumulated over many years as a marine equipment manufacturer.

EST-Floattech will also be displaying its new maritime battery system. The Octopus Series has been designed to meet maritime needs, including fully electric and hybrid propulsion. Its modular and flexible design enables it to meet a wide range of mechanical and electrical requirements, and it can be installed in virtually any vessel thanks to its modular construction, and is certified by DNV, Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas.

Zero USV, a collaboration between the founders of Marine AI and MSubs, will be at the show to discuss its launch of the world’s first fully autonomous USV fleet for long-term lease or charter. With a twin electric drive for optimum redundancy and a hybrid powertrain for resilience and efficiency, Oceanus12 is a 12m, fully autonomous turnkey package. Oceanus12 uses a suite of marine sensors that feed into Marine AI’s Guardian AI autonomy software for real-time processing and analysis and, ultimately, COLREG-compliant vessel control and navigation. The first vessels are expected to be available this autumn.

Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe Conference

Taking place alongside the exhibition is Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe Conference – the only international conference dedicated to the electrification and hybridization of marine vessels, along with the associated supporting infrastructure for ports, charging, fueling and energy supply.

With over 70 speakers and nine conference tracks, Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe Conference will enable attendees to discover the latest projects and trends from major shipowners and operators, classification societies and respected academics.

Among the esteemed specialists at the dedicated conference (rates apply) will be Trevor Downes, project chief engineer at Ricardo’s automotive and industrial business unit. In his presentation, ‘Developing a 375kW power density, marine hydrogen fuel cell module’, he will describe the development and testing of a modular, marine-certifiable, 375kW, multi-stack fuel cell system that can be integrated into a multi-MW power system. The development is part of the ‘sustainable HYdrogen powered Shipping’ (sHYpS) project. The prototype modules will have been built by June 2024 and will be undergoing development testing. This presentation will provide an update on the progress of the fuel cell system development, highlighting some of the key innovations and challenges overcome with a view to future applications and markets.

In his presentation, ‘Port electrification – MW MCS charger for the Port of Amsterdam’, Kaushik Jadhao, port electrification manager for Shell Marine, will discuss the installation of the world’s first dual-purpose MW charger with MCS connector in Amsterdam at the end of Q1 2024. According to the executive, this is a game-changer for inland shipping as this technology provides fast on-the-go charging capabilities. This will also provide additional flexibility to the battery-swapping barges. With its dual purpose, it will also serve as a high-utilization charger for terminals along the inland waterways where they serve customers from both modes.

Despoina Mitropoulou, manager of power systems at RH Marine, will give a presentation titled ‘MENENS – holistic grid design optimization of methanol-powered shipping’, in which she will discuss how the maritime consortium dedicated to ‘methanol as an energy step toward zero-emission’ is prioritizing comprehensive research on full DC grid development. The innovative system employs a model-based engineering approach, emphasizing the requirement for traceability to seamlessly integrate future components. Focusing on a yacht use case, the implementation of a decentralized DC propulsion switchboard promises significant reductions in weight and energy loss. Incorporating a secondary DC grid is equally essential for maximizing efficiency, volume and weight.

Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards 2024

Additionally, the winners of this year’s Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards will be revealed at the exhibitor hall party on June 18, at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2024 in Amsterdam. Following the expansion of the categories in 2023, the 2024 awards retain a strong focus on environmentally conscious technologies and initiatives, as well as new advances in charging, hydrogen and shoreside technologies. The awards are decided by the votes of a panel of expert journalists and consultants from the marine industry. Find out more about those shortlisted here.
