Corvus Energy provides energy storage system for Norway’s largest long-liner fishing vessel

Corvus Energy’s Orca energy storage system (ESS) has been selected for installation aboard new-build MS Geir, Norway’s largest long-liner fishing vessel, by ACEL AS, part of the ACEL Group, which specializes in turnkey power systems and electrical installations on marine vessels. An ST-156 XL design, MS Geir will be built at Vaagland shipyard and is scheduled for delivery December 2019. The new long-liner, owned by H.P. Holmeset, was developed in cooperation with independent ship design consultancy Skipsteknisk, which focused on a highly efficient vessel design that ensures minimal environmental footprint, state-of-the-art work environment and high-quality production capabilities. The Corvus ESS battery, with energy storage capacity of 270KWh, will be installed in ACEL’s A-CELL propulsion system. The ACEL scope of supply includes complete engineering and electrical installation, including PMS, IAS and main switchboards and motor starter cabinets. “We selected Corvus because of their extensive expertise and track record with energy storage solutions for the maritime industry,” said Martin Skåravik, department manager, power systems, ACEL. “The battery solution from Corvus will enable substantial cost savings in addition to increased flexibility during operation. We have worked with the team at Corvus Energy before and we look forward to working with them again on this project. In addition, we are cooperating on the NTNU Hybrid lab that we set up in Aalesund to test the solutions.” In other Corvus-related news, the company has achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification for its environmental management system and processes in its operations in Bergen, Norway. The scope of the certification includes the environmental aspects of Corvus’s design, manufacturing and service of products the company can either directly control or influence considering the lifecycle perspective of lithium-ion-based ESS. “Environmental impact has become an increasingly important consideration for our customers, as local and global environmental issues bring progressively restrictive rules affecting air, water and soil pollution,” said Abbas Zenouz, QHSE director at Corvus Energy. “The ISO 14001 certification allows us access to markets and customers where consideration of environmental impact is part of the qualification process.” The purpose of the ISO 14001 standard is to provide organizations with a framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions in balance with socio-economic needs.
