Classification society RINA has awarded type approval for Lehmann Marine’s latest Cobra battery system, highlighting its high safety standard and denoting its suitability for use within maritime applications. This joins an already existing certification from the DNV.
Lehmann Marine’s Cobra solution uses Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) technology to deliver what the company states is a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventionally used cobalt-based cell technologies. Its cell chemistry rules out the risk of fire if a battery was to overheat or if a short circuit was to occur.
In addition to the safer cell chemistry, no cobalt is used as a raw material during production, increasing the battery’s environmental credentials. Furthermore, the battery can be almost completely recycled.
The company’s battery system has also been designed to be compact and scalable, ranging from a few kWh to several MWh due to the modular design. A Cobra battery rack can be equipped with up to eight battery modules to deliver a capacity of 94kWh per rack.
